SPRAWL MEMBERSHIP FAQ

Why does The Sprawl call them "memberships" and not "subscriptions"?

With a news subscription, you have to pay in order to access a publication's journalism. We do it the other way around. We make our journalism freely available to everyone—no paywalls—and then invite you to be a part of it by signing up as a Sprawl member and pitching in a few dollars a month.

I'm a member but my credit card expired—how do I update my credit card information?

Thanks so much for doing this! Here's how to update your credit card, mailing address and other account info:

  1. Log into your Sprawl account. (If this is your first time logging in, click "Having trouble logging in?" to reset your password.)
  2. Go to "Update Credit Card."
  3. If you received an email saying there was an error in processing your donation, click "Pay Now." (If you're just a keener and are updating your info before the expiry date has arrived, click "Edit" and put in your new credit card info—and you're done. You can also choose this option if you'd rather just update your info for the next payment, rather than processing a missed payment.)
  4. Put in your new credit card info and hit "Submit." This will process your missed payment, and update your credit card info for future payments.

That's it! Thanks again for your support.

I want to support The Sprawl but I don’t have a credit card. Can I use any other forms of payment for my membership?

Our payment processing platform is a bit restrictive and doesn’t take some forms of payment, like prepaid credit cards and debit cards. However, there are some options for supporting us without a credit card:

  • You can make a donation through PayPal, which takes many forms of payment.
  • You can sign up to make a recurring donation on Patreon.
  • If neither of the above options work for you, you can send an e-transfer to hello@sprawlalberta.com, or mail us a cheque at:

How do I cancel my Sprawl membership?

  1. Log into your Sprawl account. (If this is your first time logging in, click "Having trouble logging in?" to reset your password.)
  2. Go to "Update Credit Card."
  3. In the Actions section under Recurring Donation, choose "Delete."

If you choose to cancel your membership, please shoot us an email at hello@sprawlalberta.com letting us know you've done so—it helps us keep our member count accurate and avoid sending you emails you don't want.

Please note that cancelling your membership does not automatically unsubscribe you from our weekly newsletter, Saturday Morning Sprawl. To stop receiving emails, click "unsubscribe" at the bottom of the newsletter.

If you run into any trouble or have questions, email us at hello@sprawlalberta.com and we'll help you out!

What does my Sprawl membership get me, anyway?

The short answer is: nothing! What you get when you sign up as a Sprawler is more or less the same as what you get as a non-member.

That said, we sometimes say thank you by offering our members small perks. For instance, we mail our members the occasional print edition, like this one from 2020, or this one from 2019. Right now, members are getting our Election Almanac, just in time for the municipal election in October. Who doesn’t like getting fun mail?

And of course, if you sign up as a member you get added to the mailing list for our Saturday Morning Sprawl newsletter, where we round up the new Sprawl stories from that week and give you the odd sneak peek at upcoming events, projects and opportunities.

Hey, I didn't get the latest print edition! How do I update my address?

Email us at hello@sprawlalberta.com with your new mailing address and we'll drop a copy of the print edition in the mail for you. We'll also update your address in our database so future print editions go to the right place.

How do I switch my membership from Patreon?

We've got a handy-dandy guide on how to switch your Sprawl support from Patreon to our newer platform, which defaults to CAD rather than USD and charges us lower fees. When you switch over, more of your contribution goes directly to local journalism.

Can I keep my membership on Patreon?

Absolutely. If you’d prefer to keep supporting us on Patreon, we’re not going to kick you off. We’d love it if you’d update your currency to CAD, though. Here’s how:

  1. On Patreon.com, hover over your avatar in the top right of your screen.
  2. Click Manage Memberships.
  3. From this page, click Edit.
  4. Under Currency, choose your preferred currency.
  5. Click Update to save your settings.

For those of you outside of Canada, you can also change to pay in your currency of choice (where supported: Patreon's supported currencies), which will help you avoid foreign transaction fees.
